Detection of Oil Spills

products Radar remote sensing Detection of oil spills

Wind fields and wave motion influence the radar reflectivity of the sea surface. Using appropriate processing models, it is possible to determine wind speed and direction, as well as the distribution of wave height.

Radar reflectivity is also strongly influenced by the presence of hydrocarbon films on the water’s surface. Oil spills, caused by serious accidents or poor operational practices, can therefore be detected and monitored using SAR imagery.
